Two Plates, And Nothing Over Them

G.L. c. 90, § 6 — one plate at the front and one at the rear, clean and unobscured, and lit at sixty feet

Front and rear. A registered motor vehicle operated on any way displays its register number conspicuously on the number plates the registrar furnishes, one at the front and one at the rear. If the registrar issues but one, it is attached to the rear so that it is always plainly visible.

Clean, and not obscured. Number plates are kept clean with the numbers legible, and are not obscured or their appearance obstructed in any manner by any device. When lights are required, the rear number is illuminated so as to be plainly visible at a distance of sixty feet.

Registration itself, temporary tags and specialty plates are governed by other sections that are not on this page. What a particular ticket means is a question for a licensed Massachusetts attorney.
