One Plate, And Nothing Over It

Minn. Stat. 169.79 — one on the front and one on the rear for most vehicles, and nothing over the letters, not even clear material

Front and rear. A motor vehicle other than those the section lists separately displays one plate on the front and one on the rear. A motorcycle, motor scooter, motorized bicycle, trailer over 3,000 pounds, semitrailer, or a vehicle with a dealer plate displays one, on the rear.

Nothing over the letters. All plates are securely fastened, displayed horizontally and upright, and kept legible, unobstructed and free from grease, dust or other blurring material. It is unlawful to cover the assigned letters and numbers or the state's name with any material whatever, including any clear or colorless material that affects visibility or reflectivity.

Registration itself, temporary tags and specialty plates are governed by other sections that are not on this page. What a particular ticket means is a question for a licensed Minnesota attorney.
