One Plate, And Nothing Over It

N.J.S.A. 39:3-33 — front and rear between 12 and 48 inches, and no frame that conceals the state or number

Front and rear. The owner displays the registration plate or plates horizontally, not less than 12 nor more than 48 inches from the ground, so as not to swing. If two are issued, one goes on the front and one on the rear; if only one, on the rear.

Clear, and no concealing frame. Plates are kept clear and distinct and free from grease, dust or other blurring matter, so as to be plainly visible at all times of the day and night. A person may not drive a vehicle with a plate frame or holder that conceals or obscures the state's name or the registration number.

Registration itself, temporary tags and specialty plates are governed by other sections that are not on this page. What a particular ticket means is a question for a licensed New Jersey attorney.
