The Last Hundred Feet

N.J.S.A. 39:4-126 — a turn signal given continuously during not less than the last 100 feet, and the three hand signals

Only with safety, and only after a signal. No person turns at an intersection unless in proper position, turns into a private road or driveway, otherwise turns or moves right or left, or starts or backs, unless the movement can be made with safety, and no person so turns without an appropriate signal if other traffic may be affected.

The last 100 feet. A signal of intention to turn right or left, when required, is given continuously during not less than the last 100 feet traveled before turning. No person stops or suddenly decreases speed without first signaling to the driver immediately behind.

By device instead. The signal may be given by an approved mechanical or electrical device, and must be where the vehicle's construction or load keeps a hand signal from being visible to front and rear.

Hand and arm signals, and the equipment a vehicle must carry for them, are set out in neighboring sections that are not all on this page. What a particular stop or ticket means is a question for a licensed New Jersey attorney.
