G.S. 20-29 — the license shown and a name and address given when a uniformed officer asks
A driver shows the license and gives a name and address. In North Carolina, a person driving or in charge of a vehicle who, when asked by an officer in uniform, refuses to write their name for identification, refuses to give their name and address and the name and address of the vehicle's owner, gives a false name or address, or refuses to produce the license for the officer to examine, commits a Class 2 misdemeanor.
After a crash involving the vehicle, the same duty runs to any other person who asks, not only an officer.
No person may willfully fail or refuse to comply with a lawful order or direction of a law enforcement officer or traffic control officer that relates to the control of traffic. Uniformed firefighters and rescue squad members may also direct traffic at the scene of fires, accidents and other hazards.
