Hazing

S.C. Code 16-3-510 and S.C. Code 16-3-530 — the act, helping with it, and not reporting it, each up to twelve months

It is unlawful to intentionally or recklessly do acts with a foreseeable potential for physical harm to a person, for initiation into, admission to or affiliation with a chartered or unchartered student, fraternal or sororal organization operating in connection with a school, college or university.

Helping, and staying quiet. It is also unlawful to knowingly permit or assist another in hazing, or to fail to report promptly what one knows of it to the chief executive officer of the school, college or university.

Up to $500 or twelve months. Each is a misdemeanor carrying a fine of up to $500 or up to twelve months, or both.

Customary athletic events and similar contests, and state, federal or educational military training, are outside the section. Injuries that result may be charged under the assault sections as well. A particular charge is a question for a licensed South Carolina attorney.
