Changing Your Name

Utah Code 42-1-1 — a petition in the county where you have lived a year

A person may petition the district court of the county of residence to change their name, setting out the reason, the name proposed, and that the person has been a bona fide resident of the county for the year before filing.

  • An offender, as the corrections code defines it, may not file the petition.
  • The petition states whether the person must register on the sex, kidnap and child abuse offender registry.

The court orders what notice, if any, is given of the hearing, and may order the change on proof in open court of the petition's allegations and of proper cause.
