Who Has to Report Child Abuse
Utah Code 80-2-602 — every person, not only professionals
Any person who has reason to believe a child is or has been abused or neglected, or sees a child in conditions that would reasonably result in abuse or neglect, immediately reports it to the Division of Child and Family Services or the nearest peace officer or law enforcement agency.
Who handles this in Utah: legal aid programs and the state offices, listed in the Utah directory.
- Police who receive a report notify the division immediately, and the division notifies police.
- A member of the clergy is not required to report what was learned only in a confession made directly by the perpetrator, where church doctrine binds the clergy member to confidentiality.
- An attorney is not required to report what was learned in representing a client, except as the professional conduct rules permit to prevent death or substantial bodily harm.
