Idling and Parking on the Highway
23 V.S.A. § 1110 — no more than five minutes of idling in any 60 minute period
- A stationary motor vehicle's engine may not run for more than five minutes in any 60 minute period.
- Exceptions include idling in traffic or at a signal, for the health or safety of someone inside, to run defrosters for safety, for repairs or inspection, and for a vehicle of 10,000 pounds or less on a private driveway or parking area.
A first violation brings a penalty of up to $10, a second up to $50, and a third or later up to $100.
No one may stop, park or leave a vehicle standing on the paved or main traveled part of a highway, or in a signed no parking zone. Where parking is allowed, the driver leaves room for traffic to pass and a clear view of the vehicle from 200 feet each way. A disabled vehicle that cannot be moved is excepted.
