Service in Public Places
9 V.S.A. § 4502 — no refusing service because of race, sex, disability, immigration status and more
- A place of public accommodation may not refuse or withhold its services because of race, creed, color, national origin, citizenship, immigration status, marital status, sex, sexual orientation or gender identity.
- It may not bar a person with a disability accompanied by a service animal, or someone training a service animal.
- A person with a disability gets an equal chance to take part, in the most integrated setting that fits.
- A mother may breastfeed her child anywhere in a public accommodation where they otherwise have a right to be.
A person harmed may file a charge with the Human Rights Commission or sue in Superior Court for an injunction and compensatory and punitive damages, with attorney's fees to a winner. Retaliating against someone who complained is barred.
A violation of the chapter carries a fine of up to $10,000 for each violation.
