The Last Hundred Feet
Va. Code 46.2-849 — 100 feet of continuous signal where the speed limit is over 35, and 50 feet everywhere else
The signal first. Every driver who intends to back, stop, turn, or partly turn from a direct line first sees that the movement can be made safely and, whenever another vehicle may be affected, gives the required signal, plainly visible to that driver.

Arm or device. The signal is given by hand and arm, or by an approved mechanical or electrical device. By arm, out the left side: horizontal for a left turn, upward for a right turn, downward for slowing or stopping.
Bicycles and small vehicles. A person on a bicycle, electric bicycle, moped, or motorized scooter signals an intention to stop or turn, but need not signal continuously when both hands are needed to control it, and may signal a right turn with the right arm.
The penalty for a violation is set elsewhere and is not on this page. A particular ticket is a question for the court, or a licensed Virginia attorney.
