RCW 46.61.021 — the duty to stop, and to give a name and address for an infraction
In Washington, anyone signaled to stop by a law enforcement officer for a traffic infraction has a duty to stop. The officer may detain the person for a reasonable time needed to identify them, check for warrants, check the license, insurance card and registration, and issue the notice of infraction.
A name and current address, when it is a traffic infraction being investigated. A person asked to identify themselves during the investigation of a traffic infraction has a duty to give their name and current address. A driver keeps the license in immediate possession while driving and displays it on demand to an officer.
Proof of liability insurance or other financial responsibility is given on an officer's request, and failing to provide it is a traffic infraction.
