Staying In Your Lane

W. Va. Code § 17C-7-9 and W. Va. Code § 17C-7-10 — one lane at a time, the center lane for left turns, and room behind the car ahead

  • A vehicle is driven as nearly as practicable entirely within a single lane, and leaves it only once the driver has made sure the move is safe.
  • On a three lane road, the center lane marked for left turns is used only to prepare for a left turn.
  • Signs may direct slow traffic to a lane, and drivers obey them.

No driver may follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, given the speed, the traffic and the condition of the highway.

Trucks and anything towing. Outside a business or residence district, a truck registered for more than eight thousand pounds, a bus, or a vehicle drawing another may not follow within two hundred feet of another such vehicle, except to pass.

A lane violation is a misdemeanor with a fine of not more than $100, not more than $200 on a second within one year, and not more than $500 on a third. A particular ticket is a question for a licensed West Virginia attorney.
