Speed Limits

Idaho Code § 49-654 — thirty-five in town, seventy-five on the interstate, sixty-five on state highways, and fifteen over to pass

No one may drive faster than is reasonable and prudent for the conditions, and every driver slows for intersections, railroad crossings, curves, hills, narrow roads and special hazards.

  • Thirty-five miles per hour in any residential, business or urban district, unless posted otherwise.
  • Seventy-five miles per hour on interstates, and up to eighty where a study supports it and it is posted.
  • Sixty-five miles per hour on state highways, and up to seventy where posted.
  • Fifty-five miles per hour elsewhere, unless posted, up to seventy.

Fifteen over to pass. A driver of a car, motorcycle or pickup not towing may go up to fifteen miles per hour over the posted limit while passing a slower vehicle on a two-lane road posted at fifty-five miles per hour or more, or in a passing lane, but not in a construction zone.

Speeding in a posted school zone is an infraction with a minimum penalty of $75.
