KRS 189.580 — stop, help anyone hurt, and give a name, address and insurance on request

  • A driver in a crash with injury, death, or damage to an attended vehicle or property stops immediately, finds out the extent of it, and gives reasonable assistance, including getting an injured person to medical care when needed or asked.
  • On request, the driver gives the registration number, the names and addresses of the owner, occupants and driver, and insurance information.
  • After a crash on an interstate or parkway with no death, known injury or hazardous material, the driver moves the vehicle off the roadway as soon as it can be moved safely.
  • A driver who hits an unattended vehicle or property stops and notifies the owner, leaves a written note with a name, address and registration number, or reports to the local police.

Not stopping and helping carries a fine of $20 to $2,000, up to one year in jail, or both; where the driver knew or should have known of a death or serious physical injury, it is a Class D felony.
