Housing Discrimination
La. R.S. 51:2606 — no refusing to rent or sell over race, religion, sex, disability, children, military status or hairstyle
It is unlawful to refuse to rent or sell a dwelling after a bona fide offer, or to set different terms or services, because of race, color, religion, sex, familial status, national origin, military status, or a natural, protective or cultural hairstyle. Disability is protected too.
- No advertising a preference, limitation or discrimination on those grounds.
- No telling someone a home is not available for inspection, sale or rent when it is.
- No profiting by stirring fear that people of a protected group are moving into the neighborhood.
- Hairstyles protected include afros, dreadlocks, twists, locs, braids, cornrows and Bantu knots.
An aggrieved person may sue in state court within 2 years after the practice. The court may order the practice stopped and award actual and punitive damages, costs and reasonable attorney fees.
