After A Crash
Transp. § 20-102 and § 20-104 — stop, stay, help and exchange information
A driver in a Maryland crash that injures or kills someone has to stop immediately as close to the scene as possible without obstructing traffic more than necessary, and return to and stay at the scene until the driver has given the required information.
- Give reasonable assistance to anyone injured, and arrange transport for medical treatment if it is requested or plainly needed.
- Give a name, address and the registration number of the vehicle, and on request show a license if available, to anyone injured and to the driver or person attending any damaged vehicle or property.
- Give the same to any police officer at the scene or investigating.
- If no officer is there and no one is able to receive the information, report the crash immediately to the nearest police office.
Those duties apply when someone is hurt or killed or an attended vehicle or property is damaged. Failing them carries up to 2 months or a $500 fine.
