Passing A School Bus

Mo. Rev. Stat. § 304.050 — stop until the bus moves or its driver signals, and the four lane exception

In Missouri, a driver meeting or overtaking from either direction a school bus stopped on the highway to take on or let off school children, whose driver has given the signal to stop, stops before reaching the bus and does not go on until the bus moves or its driver signals to proceed. Certified Head Start buses carrying Head Start students are covered too.

The four lane exception. A school district may let its drivers pull off the main roadway of a divided highway of four or more lanes and load or unload without the stop signal, using amber lights, where passengers do not cross any traffic lanes. With the flashing lights signaling caution, a driver may then proceed past the bus with due caution.

Each school bus carries "school bus" on the front and rear in letters not less than eight inches high, and on the rear the words State Law: Stop while bus is loading and unloading.
