Points And Suspension

Mo. Rev. Stat. § 302.304 — eight points in eighteen months suspends the license

Points are separate from the fine. A license is lost to points by accumulation over a period, rather than by any one ticket.

Email

Eight in eighteen. The director suspends the license of a person whose record shows eight points accumulated in eighteen months. Points accumulate on the date of conviction. The director notifies the driver by ordinary mail once four or more points are accumulated in a twelve-month period.

Reinstatement. After an initial suspension under the section, and with proof of financial responsibility, the license is reinstated thirty days after the suspension took effect, and longer for later suspensions.

Staying the points. A court may order a driver-improvement program, and its satisfactory completion is accepted in lieu of assessing points, except for commercial drivers and commercial vehicles. An additional two points are assessed when a listed violation causes personal injury or property damage.

Insurance surcharges, commercial license rules, suspensions for a single serious offense such as impaired driving, and reinstatement fees are set elsewhere and are not on this page. Counting the points on a particular record is a question for the state's licensing agency or a licensed Missouri attorney.
