Crossing The Road

NRS 484B.283 and NRS 484B.287 — the right of way in a crosswalk, the countdown, and a civil penalty of up to $100

In a crosswalk, the driver yields. Where no signal is operating, a Nevada driver yields, slowing or stopping if need be, to a pedestrian in a crosswalk on the driver's half of the road, or on the half the driver is turning onto, or approaching so closely from the other half as to be in danger. A driver may not pass a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk until sure it was not stopped for a pedestrian.

  • Between adjacent signal-controlled intersections, a pedestrian crosses only in a marked crosswalk.
  • No crossing an intersection diagonally unless the signals authorize it.
  • No stepping suddenly off the curb into the path of a vehicle too close to yield.

A pedestrian's violation of the yielding and crossing rules is not a misdemeanor; it carries a civil penalty of not more than $100.

  • NRS 484B.287

A driver who causes a collision with a pedestrian while failing to yield faces an additional penalty, and violations in pedestrian safety and school zones carry more; those sections are not reproduced here. Fault in a particular collision is for a court and a licensed Nevada attorney.
