Assistance Dogs In Public

G.S. 168-4.2 — a service animal in public places and in a home one rents

In North Carolina, every person with a disability has the right to be accompanied by a service animal trained to assist with that disability in the places the chapter lists, and to keep the service animal on any premises the person leases, rents or uses.

Email

The right attaches on showing a state issued service animal registration tag, or on a showing that the animal is being trained or has been trained as a service animal.

An animal in training may be taken into those places by its trainer if it wears a collar and leash, harness or cape identifying it as a service animal in training, and the trainer is liable for damage it causes. Whether an animal qualifies is a question for a licensed North Carolina attorney.
