Driving Without Insurance
N.D.C.C. § 39-08-20 — no driving without a valid liability policy, and proof on file for a year after a violation
No one may drive, and no owner may let anyone drive, a motor vehicle without a valid liability insurance policy in effect. A policy bought after the time of driving does not count for that driving.
- After a violation, proof of insurance from the carrier is kept on file with the department for one year, or the license is suspended.
- The license is surrendered for a duplicate noting the requirement, which costs $50, and removing the notation costs $50 more.
- On a second violation, the court impounds the vehicle's plates until the driver shows proof of insurance and pays a fee to the court.
