The Teen License and Its Limits
ORS 807.122 — no young passengers for six months, and no driving from midnight to 5 a.m. for a year
A license issued to someone under 18 is a provisional license. Getting it takes at least six months on an instruction permit, at least 50 hours of driving supervised by someone at least 21 who has had a license at least three years, and a traffic safety course or another 50 hours in its place.
Who handles this in Oregon: Oregon State Bar Legal Referral Service; and legal aid programs and the state offices, listed in the Oregon directory.
| Time licensed | The limit |
|---|---|
| Time licensedFirst six months | The limitNo passenger under 20 years of age who is not immediate family |
| Time licensedSecond six months | The limitNo more than three passengers under 20 years of age who are not immediate family |
| Time licensedFirst year | The limitNo driving between 12 midnight and 5 a.m. |
The night limit has its exceptions. Driving between home and work, between home and a school event with no other ride, for work, or with a licensed driver at least 25 years of age is allowed in those hours. A parent or stepparent with a license, or a driving instructor, in the car lifts the passenger limit for a 16 or 17 year old.
None of these limits apply once the holder is 18. A working exception for farm, ranch and orchard employees has its own conditions in the section. A particular ticket is a question for a licensed Oregon attorney.
