After a Crash
Utah Code 41-6a-401 — stop, exchange information, and call police when damage reaches $2,500
A driver in a crash that damaged only property may move the vehicle out of the travel lanes, and then stays at that spot until the section's duties are done. Moving the vehicle does not affect who is found at fault.
Who handles this in Utah: legal aid programs and the state offices, listed in the Utah directory.
- The driver gives the people involved the driver's name, address and registration number, and the name of the insurance provider with a phone number for the agent or the provider.
- The driver shows the license, on request and if available, to an investigating officer and to the people whose property was damaged.
- Where damage reaches an apparent $2,500 or more, the driver gives notice to the nearest law enforcement office by the quickest means available.
- Where the damaged vehicle or property is unattended, the driver finds and tells its owner, or securely attaches a written notice with the driver's name, address and registration number.
A driver who has reason to believe the crash injured anyone stops immediately at the scene, stays there, gives the same information, renders reasonable assistance to anyone injured, including arranging transport to a physician or hospital when treatment is apparently needed or requested, and notifies law enforcement immediately.
