The Insurance Requirement
23 V.S.A. § 800 — at least $25,000, $50,000 and $10,000 of liability coverage while driving
No owner or driver may operate, or let anyone operate, a vehicle on the highways without a liability policy or bond of at least $25,000 for one person and $50,000 for two or more killed or injured, and $10,000 for property damage in any one crash.
- Driving without that coverage is a traffic violation with a civil penalty of not more than $500.
- A driver must carry proof of it, and not having proof carries a civil penalty of not more than $100.
- A driver cited without proof is not convicted on producing, within seven business days, proof in effect at the time.
