Paid Sick Leave

RCW 49.46.210 — one hour for every forty worked, usable from the ninetieth day

One hour per forty. Every Washington employee accrues at least one hour of paid sick leave for every forty hours worked, and may use it from the ninetieth calendar day of employment. Unused leave carries over, though an employer need not allow more than 40 hours to carry over.

  • The employee's own illness, injury or health condition, diagnosis, treatment or preventive care.
  • Caring for a family member with any of those needs.
  • When the workplace, or a child's school or place of care, is closed by a public official for a health reason, or after a declared emergency.
  • Absences that qualify under the domestic violence leave law.
