Changing a Name
W.S. 1-25-102 — six months in Wyoming, a verified petition, and published notice
A person who has lived in Wyoming for at least six months may petition the district court of their county to change their name.
Who handles this in Wyoming: legal aid programs, lawyer referral and the state offices, listed in the Wyoming directory.
- The petition is verified by affidavit, with the full name, the name wanted, a short reason, the place of birth, the residence, and how long the person has lived in the county.
- The court orders the change if it is proper and does not harm anyone else's interests.
- Public notice is published, unless a confidentiality order protects a victim of domestic abuse.
- For a minor, no notice is needed on good cause, or where all the child's parents or guardians sign the petition.
