Getting Public Records
W.S. 16-4-202 — open to any person, released within thirty calendar days
All public records are open for inspection by any person at reasonable times during business hours, except as the law provides otherwise. A request goes to the agency's designated public records person.
Who handles this in Wyoming: legal aid programs, lawyer referral and the state offices, listed in the Wyoming directory.
- If the agency does not hold the records, it says so within seven business days of acknowledging the request, and names who does if it knows.
- A record readily available is released immediately, unless that would keep the agency from its other duties.
- Every record is released within thirty calendar days of the acknowledged request, unless good cause prevents it; then on a date agreed with the requester.
- A requester may complain to the governor's ombudsman, or ask the district court, at any time.
Copies, printouts and photographs can carry a reasonable fee the custodian sets, but no fee may be charged simply to look at a public record.
