Unemployment After a Job Ends

Iowa Code § 96.6 — ten calendar days to appeal a decision on a claim

  • Quitting without good cause attributable to the employer disqualifies, until the person has earned ten times the weekly benefit amount in insured work.
  • A discharge for misconduct disqualifies the same way; misconduct is a deliberate, material breach of the duties of the job, showing willful or wanton disregard of the employer's interest.
  • Gross misconduct, an indictable offense connected with the job, cancels the wage credits earned before the discharge.

Ten days to appeal. The employer has ten days from the notice of the claim to protest. A decision becomes final unless a party appeals within ten calendar days after notification, and an administrative law judge's decision is final unless further appealed within 15 days.
