Pulling Over for a Siren

KRS 189.930 — to the edge and stopped for lights or a siren, and a lane over for one on the shoulder

When an emergency vehicle approaches with flashing red or blue lights or a siren, every other driver yields, moves parallel to and as close as possible to the edge or curb clear of any intersection, and stops until it has passed, unless a police officer or firefighter directs otherwise.

  • No one follows an emergency vehicle on a run closer than 500 feet unless on official business.
  • Approaching a stopped emergency or listed service vehicle, on a highway of at least four lanes with two going the same way, a driver moves to a lane not next to it if that can be done safely.
  • Otherwise, or on a smaller road, the driver slows to a safe speed for the road conditions.
