Transp. § 21-202.1 — a civil penalty up to $100, no points, and nothing for insurance to consider
A civil penalty. Unless the driver got a citation from an officer at the time, the owner, or the driver as the section allows, is subject to a civil penalty of not more than $100 when a traffic control signal monitoring system records the vehicle running a red light.
- It is not a moving violation for points and is not recorded on the driving record.
- It may not be considered in providing motor vehicle insurance.
- Failing to pay or contest in time is an admission of liability and may lead to refusal or suspension of the registration.
Speed cameras, school bus and school zone cameras, and local ordinances are governed by other provisions or not at all, and are not on this page. Whether a particular notice was issued correctly, and the effect of ignoring one, are questions for a licensed Maryland attorney.
