Renting To Own It
Md. Code, Com. Law § 12-1106 — 5 days or 2 to reinstate for a fee of not more than $5, and 21 or 45 after the goods go back
The short window. A consumer who misses a payment may reinstate the agreement, without losing any rights or options, by paying past due rental charges, the reasonable costs of pickup and redelivery if the property was picked up or repossessed, and a reinstatement fee that may not exceed $5, within 5 days of the renewal date when renewing monthly, or 2 days when renewing weekly.
After the goods go back. A consumer who returned or voluntarily surrendered the property, or made it available for pickup at the lessor's request, may reinstate before a date not less than 21 days after the return, or not less than 45 days if two-thirds or more of the payments to ownership have been made.
Repossession. A lessor may repossess only by legal process or by self-help without the use of force, and at the time of repossession delivers a written notice of the right to reinstate, the last date to do it, and the amount. The consumer may reinstate within 15 days after repossession by paying past due charges, pickup and redelivery costs, and a reinstatement fee of $5.
The disclosures the agreement must carry, and the remedies for a violation, are set out in other sections that are not on this page. Whether a particular agreement can still be reinstated is a question for a licensed Maryland attorney.
