Getting Public Records

Neb. Rev. Stat. § 84-712 — free examination, copies, and an answer within four business days of a written request

All residents, and others interested, may examine public records free of charge during business hours, make copies and abstracts, and get copies, except where a statute expressly says otherwise.

Public records include all records and documents, in any form, of the state, a county, city, village, political subdivision or tax-supported district, and any of their agencies.

Four business days. On a written request, the custodian answers as soon as practicable and no more than four business days after receiving it, with a cost estimate and access or copies, a written denial with its legal basis, or a written explanation of when a large request can be filled.

Many records may be withheld under other sections. A particular request is a question for the custodian or a licensed Nebraska attorney.
