Money The State Is Holding
G.S. 116B-67 — a decision within 90 days, and payment within 30 days of allowing it
In North Carolina, a person claiming property paid or delivered to the Treasurer files a claim on the Treasurer's form, verified by the claimant, if the amount claimed exceeds $5,000. For other claims, the Unclaimed Property Division may pay the rightful owner on verification of ownership.
90 days, then 30. Within 90 days after a claim is filed, the Treasurer allows or denies it and gives written notice, with the reasons and the additional evidence needed if denied. Within 30 days after a claim is allowed, the property or its net proceeds is delivered or paid.
Through the holder. At the Treasurer's discretion the claim may be made to the original holder; if the holder certifies under oath that the claimant is the owner, the Treasurer pays, and a claimant whose claim the holder rejects may appeal to the Treasurer.
