Unfair and Deceptive Practices

R.I. Gen. Laws § 6-13.1-5.2 — actual damages or $500, whichever is greater, and up to three times the damages

Unfair methods of competition and unfair or deceptive acts or practices in any trade or commerce are unlawful.

At least $500. A person who bought or leased goods or services mainly for personal, family or household use, and lost money or property because of such a practice, may sue in superior court for actual damages or $500, whichever is greater.

The court may award three times the actual damages and other equitable relief. Where many people were hurt the same way, one of them may sue on behalf of all.

Some businesses and transactions are exempt under the act. A particular claim is a question for a licensed Rhode Island attorney.
