Earned Sick Time
21 V.S.A. § 482 — at least one hour of sick time for every 52 hours worked
- An employee accrues not less than one hour of earned sick time for every 52 hours worked.
- An employer may make a new hire wait up to one year to use it, and may cap accrual at 40 hours in a 12-month period.
- Sick time is paid at the greater of the normal hourly rate or the minimum wage.
It may be used for the employee's own illness, injury or health care, to care for a sick family member, for services or care related to domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking, or when a family member's school or business is closed for public health or safety.
