One Plate, And Nothing Over It
Wis. Stat. 341.15 — front and rear when two are issued, legible, and a forfeiture of not more than $200
Front and rear. Whenever 2 registration plates are issued for a vehicle, one is attached to the front and one to the rear. Whenever only one is issued, it goes on the rear, except the front for a truck tractor, road tractor or certain motor trucks.
Rigid, horizontal, readable. Plates are attached firmly and rigidly in a horizontal position and conspicuous place, kept legible, and displayed so they can be readily and distinctly seen and read. Any peace officer may require an operator whose plates are not properly displayed to display them as required.
The forfeiture. Operating without a current plate attached, with a plate attached in a non-rigid or non-horizontal manner or inconspicuous place, or with a plate illegible from dirt or other foreign matter, may require a forfeiture of not more than $200.
Registration itself, temporary tags and specialty plates are governed by other sections that are not on this page. What a particular ticket means is a question for a licensed Wisconsin attorney.
