Passing A School Bus

Wis. Stat. 346.48 — stop not less than 20 feet away while the red lights flash

In Wisconsin, a driver approaching from the front or rear a school bus stopped with its flashing red warning lights on stops not less than 20 feet from the bus and stays stopped until the bus moves or the red lights go off. A driver going the opposite direction on a divided highway is outside the rule.

Amber first, then red. A bus with amber and red lights turns on the amber lights at least 300 feet before stopping in a zone of 45 miles per hour or more, or at least 100 feet before in a slower zone, and switches to red at the stop.

Where a bus is loading at an intersection in a business or residence district where its lights may not be used, a driver overtaking it passes at a safe distance to its left and does not turn right in front of it.
