A Credit Freeze
W.S. 40-12-503 — placed within five business days, up to $10, free for identity theft victims
A consumer may freeze their credit report by a written request to a consumer reporting agency by certified mail, with proper identification. While it is in place, the agency does not release the report to someone deciding on new credit without the consumer's authorization.
Who handles this in Wyoming: legal aid programs, lawyer referral and the state offices, listed in the Wyoming directory.
- The agency places the freeze within five business days of the request.
- It sends written confirmation within ten business days after placing it, with a personal identification number or password for lifting it.
An agency may charge up to $10 to place, lift or remove a freeze, and nothing for a victim of identity theft who gives it a police report or case number.
