The Teen License and Its Curfew
Idaho Code § 49-307 — a license at 15, daylight hours only until 16, and one young passenger
No one may apply for a class D license sooner than 15 years of age, and no sooner than six months after finishing driver's training. In those six months the permit holder drives only with a licensed driver 21 or older in the seat beside them, and logs at least 50 hours of supervised driving, 10 of them in darkness.
Who handles this in Idaho: legal aid programs and the state offices, listed in the Idaho directory.
| The limit | What it says |
|---|---|
| The limitDaylight hours | What it saysUnder 16, driving only between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., unless a licensed driver 21 or older sits beside the driver |
| The limitPassengers | What it saysUnder 17, for the first six months, no more than one passenger under 17 who is not related by blood, adoption or marriage |
A ticket on the permit starts the six months over. A permit holder under 17 convicted of a traffic violation, or of breaking a permit restriction, has the permit canceled, and after reapplying must drive another six months without a conviction.
Full driving privileges come at 16. A particular ticket is a question for a licensed Idaho attorney.
