Signing Over A Car

Minn. Stat. 168A.10 — the notice of sale within ten days, and the buyer's 20 calendar days

The seller's ten days. The owner executes an assignment and warranty of title at delivery and states the actual selling price. Within ten days of the sale, other than one by or to a licensed dealer, the owner returns the Notice of Sale form, or transmits the information electronically, with the transferee's name, address and driver's license number and the date of sale.

Email

The buyer's 20 calendar days. The transferee, within 20 calendar days after assignment of the title certificate, executes the application for a new certificate and mails or delivers it. Failure to do so results in suspension of the vehicle's registration.

Within 48 hours. An owner who delivered possession and has complied, or within 48 hours after delivery complies, with the section's requirements for the owner is not liable as owner for damages from the vehicle's operation after delivery.

Fees, taxes, odometer statements and the dealer rules are set out in other sections that are not on this page. Whether a particular sale left the seller liable is a question for a licensed Minnesota attorney.
